                                              (1833-1885), also known as ‘Chinese Gordon’,

                                              Khartoum’, was a British Army officer and
           Provenance: Roy Davids (1943-2017),   administrator. He saw action in the Crimean
           Oxfordshire                        War as an officer in the British Army. However,
           Bonhams London, 29 March 2011, lot 383   he made his military reputation in China,
                                              where he was placed in command of the ‘Ever
           Published, Illustrated and Exhibited:   Victorious Army’, a force of Chinese soldiers

           Shanghai and Hong Kong, Three Centuries   Gordon and his men were instrumental in
