                                                                          Finely painted in the well with a European lady and
                                                                          gentleman seated on the floor beside a table with
                                                                          vase and fruits, a gallery receding into the distance,
                                                                          surrounded by a diaper-pattern band with four
                                                                          panels enclosing dense foliate scrolls, the reverse
                                                                          decorated with a medallion of foliate lotus sprays,
                                                                          the heavy body raised on four bracket feet. 28.3cm
                                                                          (11 1/8in) wide.

                                                                          The present lot in its exquisite European subject
                                                                          decoration bears witness to the East-West cultural
                                                                          exchange and Qing China’s fascination with Western
                                                                          exoticism. This fascination with the west (mirrored
                                                                          in the west by the fashion for Chinoiserie) was most
                                                                          evident in the architecture of the Xiyang Lou within
                                                                          the Yuanmingyuan, but also manifested itself in
                                                                          works of art in various mediums including, porcelain,
                                                                          painted-enamel, cloisonné-enamel, lacquer wares
                                                                          and clocks.

                                                                          Decorated within a central six-lobed flowerhead
                                                                          panel with a child, probably representing Isaac,
                                                                          reaching up to a bearded figure, possibly Abraham,
                                                                          clad in billowing robes in a landscape setting, on
                                                                          a dense ground of finger citrus and flower sprays
                                                                          within entwined scrolling foliage, the underside
                                                                          pink-enamelled in imitation of ruby-back porcelain,
                                                                          11.5cm (4.1/2in) diam.; together with a pear-shaped
                                                                          cream jug and cover, 18th century, with a butterfly
                                                                          and insects above fruit and flower sprays, 11cm (4
                                                                          1/4in) high; and a saucer, 18th century, decorated
                                                                          with two butterflies alighting on sprays of flowering
                                                                          peony and lily, 13cm (5in) diam. (4).
