Decorated with fine archaistic designs underscoring the Qianlong
emperor’s fascination with the spirit of ancient times, which he sought to
replicate, the present waterpot was either commissioned by the Imperial
Court or presented as tribute from enamel workshops in Guangdong.
Examples, such as the present lot, are rare, but an earlier related
painted enamel ‘beehive’-shaped waterpot, Kangxi, is illustrated in the
Compendium of Collections of the Palace Museum: Enamels, 5, Beijing,
           2011, no.32.
