A CARVED BAMBOO ‘LIU QING’ BRUSHPOT
Signed Zhang Wenyou, Late Qing Dynasty/Republic Period
The cylindrical vessel finely carved in liuqing using the skin with a
solitary sage making his way through a mountainous landscape
towards a hut, the reverse inscribed qingquan liuxiang, ‘fragrance
flows from pure streams’, and with the signature Zhang Wenyou.

「張文右」刻款
Zhang Wenyou was from Jiangsu Province, active in the early 20th
century. He was the winner of three awards in the Craft Contest held
during the reign of Xuantong (1909-1911). See Ip Yee and L.C.S.Tam,
Chinese Bamboo Carving, vol.2, Hong Kong, 1982, p.42, no.14.

Carved to enhance the natural features of the bamboo, inscribed in
running cursive calligraphy with a poem by Tang Yin, the bamboo of
chocolate-brown patina.

十九世紀 竹製詩文臂擱
The poetic inscription was originally written by the Ming dynasty artist
and poet Tang Yin (1470-1524) and reads:
翁乎家在水雲居,不弄綸竿便讀書。 四海五湖風月好,清高誰是笠蓑
漁。 吴郡唐寅。
Which may be translated as: ‘That old man! he lives by the sea and
clouds, when not fishing, he reads. Within the four seas and five lakes

the straw hat and cape? Tang Yin of Wu county’

TWO CARVED BAMBOO-ROOT FIGURES OF IMMORTALS
18th century
One carved as a jovial bearded figure seated on rockwork, grasping
three fruiting peach stems in his left hand, the loose robes falling
open to reveal a large belly, a crouching boy in attendance at his side.
14.5cm (5 3/4in) high; and the other carved as a Immortal seated on
rockwork, holding a fruiting lingzhi branch, the loose robes falling open
to reveal a large belly, 15cm (6in) long. (2).

The immortal holding the peaches could be Dongfang shuo, who
according to folklore stole and ate a peach of immortality, living until he
