A COPPER-RED AND UNDERGLAZE-BLUE

‘IMMORTALS’ JAR

CAIHUA TANG ZHI FOUR-CHARACTER HALL MARK IN
UNDERGLAZE BLUE WITHIN A DOUBLE SQUARE, QIANLONG-
JIAQING PERIOD (1736-1820)

The bulbous body is decorated in underglaze blue with six
of the Eight Daoist Immortals against a ground of copper-
red rolling waves, flanked by two underglaze-blue lion-mask
handles.
4 √ in. (12.4 cm.) wide, Japanese wood box

HK$300,000-500,000 US$40,000-52,000

The inscription on the base of this jar, Caihua Tang zhi, may be
translated as reading ‘Made for the Hall of Many Coloured Flowers’.
This Hall appears to have been established in the Forbidden City in
Beijing during the reign of the Qianlong Emperor, and continued to
be used by a number of his successors.

The current jar would have originally be surmounted by a pear-
shaped ewer with cover decorated with the remaining two Daoist
Immortals, together forming a double-gourd shaped ewer, such as
the one sold at Christie’s London, 10 November 2015, lot 316. Hence
it is likely that the jar was used as a warming vessel.
