the well-hollowed tapering vessel deftly carved with archaistic
motifs to the exterior, finely incised with further stylised scrolls
and mythical beasts, the stone of a greyish celadon tone with
russet inclusions
12.5 cm, 4⅞ in.
Jade vessels of rhyton form are known to have been produced
from as early as the Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 220), such as
one excavated from the tomb of the King of Nanyue, dated to
circa 122 BC, illustrated in Peter Lam, Jades from the Tomb of
the King of Nanyue, Hong Kong, 1991, pl. D44.

the compressed globular body rising from three elongated
tubular legs to a waisted neck, surmounted by a pair of curved
upright handles, the body finely incised with taotie masks, with
further archaistic motifs at the neck and on the cover, the foot
detailed with stylised plantain leaves, the cover surmounted by
a lobed rectangular knop, the stone of a pale green tone
