A BRONZE PHOENIX-HEAD ROSEWATER SPRINKLER
YUAN DYNASTY

cast in the form of a Buddhist kundika, the globular body supported on a splayed pedestal
foot, set on one side of the shoulder with an irregular handle in the form of a gnarled
prunus branch, opposite an undulating spout in the form of a phoenix head, all surmounted
by a tall neck of gu form set with a bulbous central section, the mouthrim bordered with a
band of pendent leaf lappets, the smooth patinated surface of a variegated brown colour
19 cm., 7 1/2 in.

CATALOGUE NOTE

The shape is derived from Buddhist kundika vessels and to the cult of rosewater sprinklers so popular in the cultures
of the Middle East. The present example has a prunus branch as a handle and the liquid is poured through the
