280  An amusing ivory netsuke of a laughing Fukurokuju,
                 by Shôgyoku. Second half 19th century

                 Seated with a Chinese-type fan while a karako stands
                 on top of a ladder in order to shave the god’s high
                 pate. The child’s tufts of hair of black horn. Signed
                 Shôgyoku (Masatama).
                 Height 5.7 cm

             281  An ivory netsuke of Raiden on a large drum,
                 by Masatsugu. First half 19th century
                 The God of Thunder crouches on a large taiko, a
                 drumstick in his raised right hand. Horns inlaid,
                 the nails of the drum skin of black horn. Signed
                 Masatsugu in an oval reserve. Chipped, some
                 inlays missing.

                 A festively clad karako playing a flute sits on the
                 back of a caparisoned elephant of rounded compact
                 shape. Chip.
