The small figure is carved holding a ruyi
sceptre and seated astride a lion. The
details are highlighted in gilt and red,
green, black and blue pigments. The
reverse is inscribed Xuan Qi.

A SOAPSTONE CARVING OF A
SEATED GUANYIN
QING DYNASTY, 18TH-19th CENTURY
The deity is seated with one hand holding
a sutra, held above the legs crossed, hidden
under the voluminous robes incised with
lotus flowers at the hem and a pheonix
cartouche on the back, the hair tied in a
topknot under the cowl, the facial features
carved with eyes downcast to provide an
expression of contemplation.
