A SET OF SIX soapstone-EMBELLISHED
BAMBOO-VENEER PANELS
QING DYNASTY, 18TH CENTURY
The six panels are inlaid with painted soapstones onto the
bamboo-veneer background, and depict scenes of ladies and
scholars at various pursuits within pavilions and landscaped
gardens, taken from Wang Shifu’s 14th-century classic Xi Xiang
Ji, ‘Romance of the Western Chamber’. Various scenes include
Zhang Gong and Cui Yingying’s secret night-time rendez-vous,
Yingying’s maid, Hong Niang, intervening between Zhang Gong
and Madam Cui upon her discovery of the affair, Zhang Gong’s
departure to Chang’an for the state examinations, and the scholar’s
dream of himself with his lover, en route to the capital.
