LACQUER ‘LYCHEE’ BOXES AND
COVERS
QING DYNASTY, 18TH CENTURY
The circular box and cover are each carved
with lychee fruits hanging from leafy
branches against a keyfret diaper ground,
the pattern extending to the rounded sides.
The interior is lacquered black.

MING DYNASTY, 16TH-17TH CENTURY
The cover is carved with a scholar within
a riverscape, seated in a boat with an
attendant sitting behind him. The sides of
the box and cover are crisply carved with
keyfret pattern. The interior and base are
lacquered black.

flowering prunus tree against a wavy
