A rare white jade two-handled ‘deer’ cup

The stone of very even white with attractive light
cloudiness and carved as a simple cup incised with a
band of key-fret at the foot and the rim, each handle
also incised with key-fret on the sides and surmounted
by an antlered deer crouching with front hooves resting
on the cup lip.

The present white jade cup is particularly rare for the
deer finely carved with their forelegs placed on the
rim of the cup. Compare a related octagonal jade
cup and saucer, from the Qing Court Collection, with
‘deer’ handles, dated to the Qing Dynasty, illustrated
in The Complete Collections of Treasures of the Palace
Museum: Jadeware (III), Hong Kong, 1995, pl.205 (see
fig.1 right).

A related pair of small square white jade cups, 18th
century, was recently sold at Sotheby’s New York on
