182 | Bonhams A white jade ‘lotus’ carving
18th/19th century
Carved as a tall lotus flower with petals curling
open at the rim supported on a twisted leafy
stem also issuing two smaller lotus flowers and
a bulrush, a long-legged bird perched on one
branch grasping a leaf in its beak, wood stand.
14cm (5½in) high (2).

Mr and Mrs James and Meg Mullion owned
a successful shipping business in the Far East
in the first half of the twentieth century,
during which time they built up an extensive
collection of Chinese art. As very keen and
knowledgeable race-horse owner-breeders,
they also managed a stud at Ardenode House,
the contents of which were sold in 1995.

A white and russet jade archaistic vase
Ming Dynasty
Carved with six rows of bosses around the
body flanked by a reticulated chilong on
each side, the neck with two pairs of shou
characters separated by two flanges down the
middle, and a simple circular handle on each
side, wood stand. 6.8cm (2 5/8in) high (2).
