A soapstone carving of Lu Dongbin
Qing Dynasty A fine and large pair of soapstone figures of Shoulao and Han
Carefully carved as the Immortal Lu Dongbin with a soft flowing beard Xiangzi
and scholar’s cap, reclining with his right arm resting on a jar with Qing Dynasty
incised with a cracked-ice pattern and the right hand gently holding a One figure skilfully carved as the bearded God of Longevity with
flywhisk with the handle shaped as a ruyi-sceptre, the left arm hidden distinctive domed forehead holding a scroll in his right hand and
in a long sleeve, the sword and scabbard loosely tied to his back and wearing a long robe incised and gilded with shou characters, the other
concealing a maker’s mark below, wood stand. figure carved as the Daoist Immortal Han Xiangzi with hair coiled into
7.5cm (3in) wide (2). two topknots and holding a flute raised towards his lips, both figures

The figure can be identified as the popular Immortal Lu Dongbin by 清 壽山石雕壽老及韓湘子立像一對
the fly-whisk in his right hand and the magical sword strapped to his
back. A prodigious drinker, suggested here by the relaxed pose of the
figure resting on an empty jar, he is also much admired for his fighting
prowess.
