A carved soapstone figure of a luohan
18th century
The luohan carved sitting with right leg tucked
underneath and the left knee raised and
supporting a single shoe held in the right hand,
the face with incised curling beard and brows,
and a thick moustache painted black either
side of the red-painted mouth, the robe incised
with floral and cloud scroll patterns and edged
with green and red paint, the separately carved
rockwork base similarly painted.

An unusual soapstone figure of an
emaciated Siddartha
18th/19th century
The monk carved seated on a rush mat with
the right knee raised supporting both hands
crossed over the knee, the right hand holding a
string of prayer-beads and the bony fingers of
the left hand hanging loosely, the face staring
ahead with an open mouth between sunken
cheeks and the ribs and other emaciated limbs
strongly delineated.
