A very rare dated famille verte brushpot, bitong
Kangxi, dated by inscription to renchen year (AD1712)
Delicately enamelled with a rectangular cartouche framing a scene of a
boatman punting on a raft bearing a scholar along a river underneath an
overhanging cliff issuing a pine branch, the reverse with blue calligraphy.

清康熙1712年 五彩開光山水人物圖筆筒
The calligraphy inscription on the present lot was composed as a tribute
to the famous Ode to the Red Cliff by the poet Su Shi (1037-1101), also
known as Su Dong Po. The poem is supposedly set at the site of the Battle
of the Red Cliff which took place between General Cao Cao and Liu Bei in
AD.208.
