Xu Subai (1909-1976)
The tall curved section elegantly carved using
the pale skin as a lush vignette of peonies,
grasses and seasonal flowers, inscribed
lower right Hanting hua, Subai ke 寒汀
畫 素白刻, (painted by Jiang Hanting 江寒
汀, carved by Xu Subai 徐素白) and upper-
left entitled Bai hua qi fang 百花齊放 (One
Hundred Blossoms), set into a stepped
hongmu stand.

Xu Subai was one of the preeminent bamboo
carvers who revitalized the craft in the 20th
century. A brush holder by him made in 1961
is part of the Metropolitan Museum of Art
collection, Purchase, Friends of Asian Art
Gifts, 2008.421.
