A MOLDED PORCELAIN SNUFF BOTTLE
Qianlong mark, Jingdezhen kilns, 1800-1880
Of compressed form, with a flat gilt lip and
recessed foot, the body molded with a
continuous design of a dragon chasing a
flaming pearl amid formalized clouds in iron-
red with gilding, bearing a four-character
Qianlong mark to the foot.
2 1/4in (5.7 cm) high

US$4,000 - 6,000

A similarly molded snuff bottle in polychrome
enamels rather than iron red was sold in
these rooms 20 March 2012, lot 50. Several
bottles of this type bear a Guanyao Neizao
(Made in the Imperial Kilns) mark, a innocuous
yet vague reference to imperial aegis, albeit
without naming a specific emperor. It is
theorized these bottles were produced during
the Taiping Rebellion, with the ambiguous
mark testifying to uncertain times.
