                          QING DYNASTY, 17TH-18TH CENTURY
The irregularly shaped pebble is delicately carved on both sides depicting nine elderly
scholars engaging in literary pursuits such as playing chess, surrounded by a landscape
detailed with pine trees, rocks and hanging cliffs. One tip is carved with the signature
Zigang. The stone is of a beige tone with extensive areas of russet ‘skin’.
                          2 ¡ in. (5.9 cm.) long, box
                          HK$350,000-500,000 US$46,000-65,000
The subject matter depicted on the current pebble is known as the 'Nine Elders of Fragrant
Hill', in reference to the Tang poet Bai Juyi (772-846) and his group of friends, who in retirement
resided at the Fragrant Hill Temple in the city of Luoyang.
