A CARVED WHITE AND RUSSET JADE ‘NINE ELDERS OF
FRAGRANT HILL’ PEBBLE
QING DYNASTY, 17TH-18TH CENTURY
The irregularly shaped pebble is delicately carved on both sides depicting nine elderly
scholars engaging in literary pursuits such as playing chess, surrounded by a landscape
detailed with pine trees, rocks and hanging cliffs. One tip is carved with the signature
Zigang. The stone is of a beige tone with extensive areas of russet ‘skin’.

The subject matter depicted on the current pebble is known as the 'Nine Elders of Fragrant
Hill', in reference to the Tang poet Bai Juyi (772-846) and his group of friends, who in retirement
resided at the Fragrant Hill Temple in the city of Luoyang.
