A BRONZE OPENWORK ‘DRAGON’ CIRCULAR CENSER
AND COVER
MING DYNASTY, 16TH-17TH CENTURY
The top of the cover is cast in openwork with a pair of writhing
chilong, enclosed by a border of alternating bagua, the Eight
Trigrams, and archaistic monster masks. The sides of the cover
and the censer are plain, with the outer rim of the recessed base
showing traces of gilding and surrounding an apocryphal Xuande
mark to the centre.

LUDUAN-FORM CENSER
LATE MING-EARLY QING DYNASTY,
17TH CENTURY
The sturdy beast is cast and finely decorated
around the body in silver inlay. The
detachable cover is modelled as the head of
the ferocious beast with bulging eyes and a
snout-like nose below pricked ears.
