The current bottle, with its depiction on each side of a horse by

the Qing court collection and still in Beijing, is illustrated in The
Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum. Snuff
Bottles, Hong Kong, 2003, pl. 341. See also an example with
an official, horse and dog on one side, and a Bactrian camel on
the reverse, illustrated in Hugh Moss, Victor Graham and Ka Bo

AN AGATE ‘DUCKS’ SNUFF BOTTLE
SUZHOU, SCHOOL OF ZHITING, QING
DYNASTY, 18TH – 19TH CENTURY
5 cm, 2 in.
PROVENANCE
Y.F. Yang, Hong Kong, 14th December 1972 (HK$12,000).
HK$ 15,000-20,000
US$ 1,950-2,550
The present bottle is a fine example of the Suzhou School
of agate bottles. Created by a highly imaginative and skilled
carver, the abstract dark brown inclusions have been
skilfully incorporated into a lively exterior scene depicting
mandarin ducks amidst lotus and other flowers. Another
Suzhou agate snuff bottle of similar quality from the Kaynes-
Klitz collection and Joe Grimberg was sold in our New York
rooms, 14th September 2010, lot 145.
