A WHITE JADE ‘PEAPOD’ PENDANT
QING DYNASTY, 18TH CENTURY
the oval pebble carved as a pair of peapods
suspended from an openwork vine, the smaller
pod resting against the larger, three leaves and
a coiling tendril carved in high relief falling over
the pods, the details naturalistically rendered
with soft undulations to the tender leaves,
subtle rounding where the peas press against
the shell, and minute ridges on the stringed
edge of the pod, the stone an even icy white
tone

A SMALL WHITE JADE ‘CHILONG’
PENDANT
QING DYNASTY, 18TH CENTURY
the petal-shaped stone carved to one side
in high relief with a sinuous chilong crawling
across its surface, the creature’s limbs splayed
in a low crouch and the bifurcated tail tracing
the pointed end of the petal, a swirl of qi incised
to one side of the fantastic animal, the opposite
side caved in low relief with a ‘flaming pearl’,
the stone an even icy white color
