AN ARCHAISTIC CELADON JADE
TWO-HANDLED VASE
QING DYNASTY, 18TH CENTURY
of flattened, elongated baluster form and
almost rectangular section, with a lipped
rim and foot, the two broad sides intricately
carved in shallow relief with taotie above a
pair of stylized confronting chilong, all against
a ground of archaistic scrolls and motifs, the
shoulders with two elephant-mask handles,
the narrow sides left plain, the stone an even
bluish-celadon color
height 5½ in., 14 cm

well-hollowed, the rounded sides resting on
four ridged ruyi-shaped feet, rising to a gently
everted rim, a circle incised above the base of
the well, the lustrously polished stone a deep
celadon color with russet veining and faint
white mottling
