The advent of Buddhism in China more
than two thousand years ago heralded
profound changes in almost every aspect
of life and thought, state and society.
Buddhism differed markedly from earlier
Chinese religions and philosophies. It
challenged and in part even flatly
contradicted some of the most cherished
concepts and ideals of the ancient
