A rare gilt-bronze figure of Manjusri with mandorla
Circa 15th century
The finely cast figure seated on a double-lotus pedestal, the head
adorned with a heavy Buddhist crown inlaid with turquoise and a
lotus blossom at each shoulder supporting a sword on the right and
a book on the left, the fingers twisting in dharmachakramudra, all
raised on a tiered pedestal embellished with vajra-style motifs set
with coloured stones on either side of a frieze with two repoussé
Buddhist lions and flanked by two kneeling attendants, the separately
cast mandorla with a standing attendant attached on either side in
front of the repoussé backdrop containing two rampant Buddhist
lions standing on elephants beneath a flaming halo and a winged
garuda bird, all bordered by flames, box.
