The present ivory figure of Guanyin is unusual for its elaborate carving
with the Bodhisattva finely adorned with a crown bearing a carving
of Buddha Amitabha, of whom Guanyin is an emanation. Compare a
similar ivory figure of Guanyin, circa 1580-1644, illustrated in Chinese
Ivories from the Shang to the Qing, London, 1984, pl.32.
