A mother-of-pearl veneered hinged box
19th century
The cover and sides of the box inlaid with mother-of-pearl panels,
the cover with a lively qilin prancing through cloud scrolls surrounded
by the Buddhist symbols of lozenge, the double axe, the wheel
and double pearls, the front of the box inlaid in rows to imitate
drawers and carved with floral scrolls on the top row, five cranes in
the second row above two striding five-clawed dragons above four
phoenix and two flaming pearls at the bottom, the back with two
spotted deer nestled in a pine, prunus and lingzhi fungus thicket
beside a clambering monkey and birds, the sides each with four birds
amidst flowering prunus, wood stand.
