FIVE ARCHAISTIC JADE AND HARDSTONE ANIMAL CARVINGS
Late Qing Dynasty
The tiger carved in a rectangular form, its legs tucked under, eyes alert,
ears surmounting the head, the mouth perforated for stringing, the
stone reddish-brown and lightly polished; the smaller tiger of elongated
body resting in a similar pose, drilled between the paws for stringing,
the celadon stone stained russet brown in areas; the horse rolled on
the ground with head turns back, the celadon stone stained black in
areas; the mythical beast simply carved in a recumbent pose with its
head raised, the bushy tail swept on its haunch, the celadon stone
stained black in areas; the recumbent cat with a kitten on the back, the
gray stone with russet inclusions. (5)
Brown tiger: 3in (7.6cm) long;
Green tiger: 2 3/8in (6cm) long;
Horse: 2in (5.2cm) long;
Mythical beast: 2in (5.1cm) long;
Cat and kitten: 1 3/4in (4.5cm) long

The present horse, with two hindlegs raised in the air, compares
closely to the celadon jade horse in the Brundage Collection, illustrated
by Knight, Li and Tse Bartholomew, Chinese Jades: Ming Dynasty to
Early Twentieth Century, From the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco,
San Francisco, 2007, p. 69, no. 38, described as 17th century.

Late Qing Dynasty
Each of short cylindrical form with thick walls, drilled vertically to allow
stringing, the stones of light celadon, reddish brown, and mottled
black altered red and black in areas.
