           A HARDSTONE FIGURE OF AN OFFICIAL
           19th - 20th century
           Standing with solemn expression holding a ruyi
           scepter in his left hand, wearing long court robes
           and a loose belt, the hat decorated with a pair
           of confronted dragons centering a flaming pearl
           above cresting waves, the beige stone with gray
           mottling in areas, wood stand.

           The figure depicted in the present lot could be
           the God of Culture and Literature 文昌帝君,
           a Taoist deity in Chinese mythology. Revered
           as the patron of civil service examinations, this
           deity enjoys widespread popularity throughout
           the nation. Typically depicted as a figure holding
           either a jade tablet, a ruyi sceptre or a pen, these
           symbolic attributes underscore his association
           with knowledge, scholarly pursuits, and the
           auspices of cultural achievement.
