A BRONZE ‘LAOZI AND BUFFALO’ CENSER
17TH CENTURY

明末清初 十七世紀 銅老子騎牛香爐

The bufalo is shown with its head lowered, its body is
hollowed to form the censer. Laozi forms the cover and
holds a scroll in his left hand, his long robe is pierced on
the reverse to issue smoke.

Both fgures are shown seated at ease in loose robes
revealing their bare chest and abdomen, their right
elbow resting on a cloth bag.
