A BAMBOO MAN’S JACKET                                                      The use of bamboo jackets and vests dates back to the Ming dynasty. They
19TH CENTURY                                                               were worn as an undergarment to aid air circulation, which helped to protect
                                                                           the outer garments from perspiration stains during the hot weather.

                                                                           A similar jacket can be found included in the exhibition, Dress in Hong Kong:
The jacket is made of a network of bamboo tubes. The edges are fnished in  A Century of Change and Customs, Hong Kong Museum of History, Urban

                                                                           They are made for a fourth rank oficial and embroidered in counted stitch
                                                                           technique in coloured silks and gold and silver thread, depicting a yellow goose
                                                                           standing on a rock emerging from waves, fanked by fowers and tall rocks, within
                                                                           a ruyi head border.

                                                                           Acquired in Asia by Augustine Heard, who established a trading house in
                                                                           Shanghai in 1860 or Max von Brant who was German Minister Plenipotentiary to
                                                                           China (1875-1893).
                                                                           Inherited by the late Mrs Horace Gray, and was purchased by the vendor in
                                                                           the 1970s.
