A LARGE LONGQUAN CELADON ‘LOTUS’
DISH
MING DYNASTY, 14TH-15TH CENTURY
The center of the dish is abstractly carved
with a central lotus spray, surrounded by
raised borders, all under a glaze of olive-
toned sea-green color that continues over
the foot to cover the base apart from the
unglazed fring ring.

The size, shape and decoration of this dish are all
features that are found on other large Longquan
celadon dishes that were often exported to the
Near East. Several similar dishes, also dated
to the 15th century, is illustrated by R. Krahl in
Chinese Ceramics in the Topkapi Saray Museum,
vol. I, Yuan and Ming Dynasty Celadon Wares,
London, 1986, p. 317, nos. 305-311.

A RARE LONGQUAN CELADON SHRINE
YUAN-EARLY MING DYNASTY, 14TH-15TH
CENTURY
The thick-walled shrine of ovoid shape is
raised on a domed base and has an hexagonal
‘tile’ roof surmounted by a double-gourd
rising from a lotus. An opening cut into one
side has a shelf at the bottom, an overhang
with applied scroll decoration above, and a
loop to one side to fasten a door. The whole
is covered with a glaze of sea-green color.
