                                                   Sy?iopsis,

                         Paintings   are  occasionally mounted and surrounded        by
                    borders   of paper and    silk,  when   the  word   Hioho   follows
                    the name    of the workman.











                                                    HIOHO.
                                                   Mounted.
                         The    characters   Yegaku   and   Hitsu,  the   latter  being
                    read  as Hitsusu when used with        the name of a painter, do
                    not   appear   so   frequently  upon    books   as  upon   pottery
                    the   word Dznsu, having     the same     meaning,   is  sometimes
                    used.    The   examples    given  below   are  copied from works
                    of the Kano and Tosa families.

                         The former of the two characters given below         is copied
                    from   an  ancient   kakimono,  and   the  latter from   a modern
                    yebon.
