                        Painted in black upon the labels attached to two makimono
                   containing a panoramic view of the battle of Yashima, mag-
                   nificently illuminated in the Tosa style; probably seventeenth
                   century.   This battle  is the most notable event in the histor}^
                   of Japan, and was fought      in 1185  a.d., near Hiogo      it was
                                                                             ;
                   the  concluding   event  of the war waged between        the  great
                   houses of Taira and Minamoto.         The defeat of the house of
                   Taira on this occasion led to the foundation of the Shogunate
