The inscriptions given above are copied from two
makimono, and the lacquered case which contains them.
They all have the same meaning : Ta-ke to-ri mono-gatari.
Take-tori inonogatari, the title of the work, which illustrates
the manners and customs of the Japanese nobility. It
contains numerous paintings executed in the highest style
of the Ukiyo branch of the Tosa school, and they are
accompanied by descriptive MSS. in Chinese and Hira-kana
characters. Early works. The characters at the foot of
Nos. 576 and 577 are Chiu and Ge respectively, meaning
the middle and last volume.
