                                         No. 658.
                Painted   in  gold  upon   the  under   part  of  an  ancient
           Tobacco-box    of  iron, damascened with     silver.  Sen-zo Ka-
           To  Kiyo-masa Ko-hei Masa-uzi.       Kato Kiyomasa, the ancestor
           of Kohei Masaiizi.    Kiyomasa was a noted warrior, a favorite
           of Taico Sama, and      the  ancestor   of the  original possessor
           of the  box.




























                Engraved upon an      iron  Sword-guard,    beautifully decor-
           ated with flowers   in  relief.  The upper group of characters
           on   the  left  read  :  Otsubani  kayesu   akariya   yubotan,    a
           Japanese ode.    The three lower characters are illegible.     The
           seal, which   is  of gold,  is  that of the maker, Matsushita o.
