32               MARKS AND SEALS ON POTTERY.

                         Dai Nippon, Great Japan,      is a favourite  inscription, and
                     is used almost universally by the potters of Kaga and Owari,
                     and in  a  lesser  degree   by those   of  other  provinces,  as  a
                     portion  of  their  marks.    Upon   Owari   porcelain  the name
                     of the principal town, Seto, is generally given, and few inscrip-
                     tions upon Kaga ware       are found without the word Kutani
                    being used.    Examples of these and other words of a similar
                     character  are  given  below.
