66. ith a short and straight neck, this large, globular jar
Jar Wrests on a relatively small foot. It was made in two
19th century, Joseon parts (top and bottom) and luted together at the center. The
TL results: fired between 150 & 300 years ago lip shows evidence of being ground or smoothed down after
Porcelain with underglaze cobalt decoration firing. The area just below the neck is decorated with a band
H: 40 cm, W: 36.5 cm of seven stamped abstract turtle-like designs. The main
decoration on the front of the body is composed of a large
abstract flower with leaves, painted in bold brush strokes,
and a few tendrils. The back is decorated with a smaller but
similar composition. The base is glazed, and the footrim had
been haphazardly wiped free of glaze.

Judging by the boldly painted brush strokes, this jar was made
at a kiln in Haeju City, South Hwanghae Province, located
in present-day North Korea. These types of storage jars held
foodstuffs and were kept in the women’s quarters. The jar
probably originally had an associated lid.
