TURQUOISE GROUND PLANTERS AND
STANDS PAINTED IN FAMILLE ROSE
ENAMELS
Late Qing/Republic period

hole centering the recessed base and
similar border bands on the flared rim and

flowering branches and garden rocks on
a pale blue ground while the other planter
adds roosters, bamboo and coxcomb and
to the garden rocks and peonies in bloom
to a ground of darker turquoise hue; the two
cushion-shaped stands painted to match the
turquoise ground, roosters and vegetation
of the second planter (wear and soiling from
use, stands retouched). [4]
21 1/4in (54cm) diameter of planters
29 1/2in (75cm) height of planter and stand
$4,000 - 6,000
The decorative program on this lot includes
a number of visual puns. Combining a
6303 rooster (gongji) with peonies (fuguihua)
represents the sentiment gongming fugui -
may you receive official rank and honor. A
rooster (gongji) and cockscomb (jiguanhua)
are a visual pun for the similar sentiment
guanshang jiaguan - may you continuously
rise in rank. Finally a large rooster (da gongji)
perched on a rock (shi) also becomes a visual
metaphor for shishang daji - good fortune
in the home. See Terese Tse Bartholomew,
