A ROOT AMBER SNUFF BOTTLE
19th century
Of slightly flattened ovoid form, surmounted by a flaring tubular neck
with a broad lip and small mouth, the shoulders finely carved with lion
mask and mock ring handles, all supported on an inset concave oval
foot, the swirled variegated ocher material with patterns resembling
burl wood.

A CINNABAR RED SNUFF BOTTLE
Imperial, Beijing Palace Workshops, 18th century
Of flattened shield shape, each side carved cinnabar lacquer with sixty
stylized shou characters on an ocher lacquer wan-fret diaper, all within
a leiwen border, with a waisted neck.

十八世紀 剔紅雕萬壽紋鼻煙壺
Several identical, similarly dated bottles have been published,
leading scholars to believe the bottles were originally part a of set
commissioned to celebrate an imperial birthday. Given the count of
sixty shou medallions, the birthday was likely a significant one. For
