Mary, Queen of Scots (1542-1587), also known as Mary Stuart or Mary
I of Scotland, ascended the throne of Scotland as an infant in 1542
following the death of her father. Through her grandmother Margaret
Tudor (1489-1541), she had the strongest claim to the throne of
England after the children of Henry VIII. She posed a strong threat to
the ascension of Henry’s daughter Elizabeth I, who eventually had her
executed in 1587.
