In his 1849 account The Canton Chinese, the
American factor Osmond Tiffany described the
gardens as follows: “The house stood in the midst
of the water, and was approached by bridges
winding about in various directions, and guarded by
balustrades as intricate and fantastic as the ivory
carvings. There were bridges beginning every where,
and ending in nothing at all” (online edition cited). By
the second half of the 19th century the garden fell
into a state of disrepair.

flowers, each two within one frame, the other four
lantern painting in one frame.
