Along the Huadi garden, the splendid Guangzhou
garden of the hong merchant Poontinqua
(Puankhequa, or Pan Qiguan 1714-1788) and his
son Puankhequa II, was legendary among the
foreign community during the late 18th and early
19th centuries. A watercolor of the garden was
painted by George West while he served as an
official painter during Caleb Cushing (1800-1879)’s
diplomatic mission to China, and is now in the
collection of the Library of Congress.
