This painting depicts Mary and Pierre de Bocosel, Lord Chastelard, a
French nobleman who courted the young Mary while she was living in
France. When Mary returned to Scotland in 1561, Chastelard could
no longer publicly pay court as a suitor and plotted to remain near to
his lover by serving as her confidant and secretary. Mary, was formally
betrothed to Henry Stuart (Lord Darnley). Chastelard vainly tried to
continue their romance. One evening, he hid himself under her bed,
where he was discovered by her maids of honor. Mary pardoned the
offence, but to no avail. Weeks later, he was discovered a second time,
sentenced, and beheaded shortly after.

The present painting’s composition is based on a print by Andrew
Duncan, first published in 1830, and after a painting by Henri Jean-
Baptiste Victoire Fradelle (1778-1865).
