The present lot depicts the devastating fire that swept through the
Foreign Factories in Canton in November of 1822. The view illustrates
the buildings ablaze with junks bearing witness to the conflagration in
the foreground. A second depiction of the 1822 fire is in the collection
of the Hong Kong Museum of Art and illustrated in Sargent, Views of
the Pearl River Delta, Macau, Canton, and Hong Kong, 1997, pp. 174-
175.
