The port of Shanghai was opened to Western trade under the terms of
the Treaty of Nanking in 1842 ending the first ‘Opium War’. Soon after,
wharves and trading houses were built along banks of the Huangpu
river. This early view of the European and American trading houses and
consulates along the west bank of the Huangpu river illustrates the
           Bund in its formative stage.
