The eight paintings in this album depicting details of the life cycle of the
common silk worm (bombyx mori) were of notable scientific interest
to collectors, as silk remained a major trade commodity even into
the early twentieth century, despite its gradual eclipse by tea as the
primary trading good between China and the West.
