Oil on canvas, on a stretcher, framed and glazed, a wood piece early in January 1841, when Captain Charles Eliot and his warships
attached to the frame signed Yo Shen in Chinese. exacted an agreement that Hong Kong Island would be yielded to
12 1/2 x 28 3/8in (31.8 x 72.1cm) Britain. Although the Emperor repudiated this agreement, in August
1842 the cession was ratified by the Treaty of Nanking. Within the
US$20,000 - 30,000 space of a year, the shore became a sizable town. In 1869 Britain
gained the adjacent peninsula of Kowloon, and in 1898 obtained a 99-
year lease on the New Territories.
