A LARGE ASSEMBLED GROUP OF FAMILLE ROSE ENAMELED
CUPS
Late Qing/Republic period
Including a set of seven cups, each painted with a butterfly and
flowering branches, the bases stamped kai nan mao hao; a pair of
cups painted with a butterfly, bamboo, mallow and a flowering plum
branch that continues on the interior, the base bearing a Qianlong
mark; one cup with a rooster, rock and flowering coxcomb bearing a
Qianlong mark; one cup with a beauty in a garden bearing a Qianlong
mark (hairline crack); and one cup with a fish, bird, flowering branches
and garden rock the base stamped Xinan Wang Fulong zhi (chipped).

Qianlong mark
Molded with a flared rim to the waisted neck and painted to the front
with cranes, phoenixes and other auspicious birds amid flowering
5128 branches and a garden rock, the reverse bearing Qianlong and Lang
Shining seals surrounding a poem, the recessed base also bearing the
six-character mark in iron red and gilt seal script.

Guangxu marks, Republic period
colors as rising from waves on the exterior walls above a cobalt key- Each dragon painted in iron red and gilt and the phoenix in bright
fret band and gilt striping along the foot, the mark on the recessed colors set amid clouds and flames across the exterior walls of the bowl
base written in underglaze blue standard script. and cover, a colored leiwen band finishing the exterior rim of the bowl
6 7/8in (17.5cm) diameter and the exterior finial of the cover, the recessed base of the bowl and
the interior base of the cover finial on the lid bearing the six-character
US$6,000 - 8,000 mark in iron red standard script (one cover with large loss, some edges
with pin-point chips).

A bowl of the same decoration but smaller size was sold in Bonham’s
Edinburgh sale 24081, 22 March 2017, lot 187 (diameter 15cm).
Bowls of this larger size are also known. See Imperial Porcelain from US$2,500 - 4,000
the Late Qing the Kwan Collection (Art Gallery, the Chinese University
of Hong Kong, 1983), where a big (no. 40) and a regular sized bowl
(no. 44) in this pattern are recorded in a comprehensive list of wares
produced in the 26th year of Guangxu (1900), pp. 24-25. Both sizes
of the same pattern were offered in Christie’s, Hong Kong sale of
Important Chinese Ceramics, 28 November 2005, lot 1365 (single
bowl, diameter 6in [15.2cm]) and lot 1368 (pair, diameter 6 7/8in
[17.4cm]).
