A GOLD-LACQUER SUZURIBAKO
(BOX FOR WRITING UTENSILS)
AND COVER
Edo period (1615-1868), 19th century
Of standard rectangular form with a
kabusebuta (overhanging lid), the interior fitted
with a frame holding the suzuri (ink-grinding
116 stone) and cloisonné-enamel suiteki (water
dropper); the lacquer decoration executed
in gold takamaki-e and hiramaki-e, depicting
a mass of chrysanthemum blossoms on a
hirame ground on the outside of the lid and
the inside of the lid with Kikujido seated with
a calligraphy brush beside chrysanthemum
blooms and kumazasa (bamboo), the inside
of the box similarly lacquered with kumazasa
(bamboo) growing beside a hillock; unsigned.

One Meiji era (1868-1912),
late 19th/early 20th century and one Taisho
(1912-1926) or Showa (1926-1989) era,
mid 20th century
The first a four-tiered box lacquered in gold
hiramaki-e with a continuous design of cranes
in flight or standing among pine and tachibana
oranges interspersed with tasselled taka-
no-hane (hawk-feather) decorated fans on a
tight nashiji ground, the interior of red lacquer,
unsigned, 23cm x 20.2cm x 18.3cm (9in x
8in x 7 1/8in); the second of reddish wood
painted with overlapping gold lacquer fans
117 lacquered or inlaid in shell with assorted Rinpa
motifs, signed on the top in gold lacquer on
one fan Shosai, 19.5cm x 18cm x 18cm
(7 5/8in x 7 1/16in x 7 1/16in); one with a
wood storage box. (10).
